Juliana Kiss

Julianna Kiss joined the EMES network in 2015 first as one of the authors of the Hungarian country report in the ICSEM project. Recently, she has also been involved in the COST EMPOWER-SE and the EU MAPPING projects. She has participated in several cconferences and workshops, co-authored publications, and in January 2019 co-organized an international workshop in Budapest (2nd WG1 Meeting "Towards an international typology of social enterprise models: Progress, perspectives and common trends”). Julianna completed her PhD in Social Policy at Eötvös Loránd Science University, Faculty of Social Sciences in 2018. The objective of her dissertation was the analysis of the emergence and institutionalization of social enterprises, and their connections with the non-profit sector in Hungary. Besides, she has MA degrees from English Language and Literature (including Teaching English as a Foreign Language), Communication Studies and Sociology. During her studies she primarily focused on civil society, the third sector and social enterprises, as well as the situation of the Roma in Hungary. Julianna has been working at the Corvinus University of Budapest since 2018 as assistant reseacrh fellow (since September 2019 as research fellow), participating in research on "Aspects on the development of intelligent, sustainable and inclusive society: social, technological, innovation networks in employment and digital econom", where she has been focusing on social enterprises targeting the Roma in Hungary. Starting in September 2019, she is going to lead a new research project entitled "Social enterprises in social and health services" focusing on the activities and strategies of social entrepreneurs contributing to the transformation of institutions in social and health services. Besides, she has been teaching classes mainly in the topic of social enterprises and decision techniques (enterprise and project planning and management skills). Before beginning work at her current institution, she worked part-time at the University of Miskolc, where she examined the situation of civil society and social enterprises in various Central and Eastern European countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Lithuania), especially in peripheral rural areas. She was one of the authors and editors of the publication entitled "Social and solidarity economy in post-socialist peripheries". Prior to her involvement in academia, Julianna was researcher and program assistant/coordinator in different civil society organizations. She worked at the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), a public interest law organization that aims at combating anti-Romani racism and human rights abuse of Roma; the Kurt Lewin Foundation, a Hungarian non-governmental organization that helps promote social dialogue, tolerance and the dissemination of knowledge and skills required for active civic participation; and the Autonomia Foundation, an NGO focusing on strengthening vulnerable social groups and the Roma in particular through the distribution of grants, local development, trainings and research. Her main responsibilities in these organizations included research and project management/administration. Besides, she previously volunteered in the Hungarian branch of the international organization Makesense focusing on social enteprises, and in other civil society organizations and initiatives as well (teaching English, collecting donations, etc).
